May the 4th be with you!

For those like me, who have been brought up on mahoossive amounts of sci-fi, this genius game is a revelation. Everyone has heard of Star Trek. Few people won’t get the reference to Obi-Wan Kenobi at breakfast (“Use the Fork”). A few people may have seen the genre classic Farscape where arguably all the quality sci-fi-space-ship-stellar-sci-fi path began. Executed in the same cold monochrome, tattered style as the infamous Hitman slot game (which needs no introduction) Battlestar Galactica, along with the Colossus of the Space Race film series, Starship Troopers, remains one of the most heartily loved Iliads of our time.

From 1978 to 2010, the show goes on to deliver excellent performance and never-ending suspense with a crew of old-time classic characters.

Glen Larson’s greatest legacy yet

Man has always been fascinated by space. Its glittering diamonds on black silk of the skyline, placid, mesmerizing, eternal… At all times gazing into the night sky has been a sign of dedication to something much greater. Scientists peering through telescopes in hopes of finding a comet, lovers colliding like comets under the velvet covers of the night… How many wonderful, silly, scary and tender moments these stellar skylights granted the humanity! Heart-stopping terror of The Aliens, horrible yet humorous appeal of The Critters, the impeccable Predators film instalments…The humanity definitely owes The Universe for Alf, Earth’s second greatest marvel after The Pyramids. So you can understand my urge to suddenly stand to attention as a weary, gravel-pitched voice on the Intercom welcomes me onto the ship.

Don’t want to give away too much good, but, by the way, since we are on the subject of lovers here’s a good old-fashioned True Love Story with a good ending and a not so humble  3,654,000 coins top possible payout. Just in case, you know. Space is so cold and love is so rare.

The execution of this interface is very well thought-through and seems to have a lot of money invested into it. The design is absolutely fantastic, even if I do say so myself. It just hits you, a wall of stupendously great orchestral music on the level of Hans Zimmer, a thoughtful dark blue deep space background, and old school, jagged 3D letters on the screen. It reminded me slightly of Moya and a happy childhood spent glued to the screen of a TV that took VHS tapes with the enigmatically glinting design of Farscape on the front. I’ve been a loyal fan of Farscape, and am to this day, and I’m very much in favor of all American sci-fi, expecially everything to do with Galactica journeys. I’ve ednlessy been fascinated with Einsten, quantum physics, the idea of alien life forms and limitless possibilities, and this absolutely superbly made experience is a firm 100% yes vote for me.

By the way, the game seems to remember you (don’t ask me how) and the next time you return, the same tired but enthusiastic voice quietly says: “Welcome back to BattleStar Galactica”. Everything seems to be very well-thought-through, again, down to the theme, which changes should you refresh the page. I repeat myself because of childish excitement, but the orchestral music is superbly composed, and is of very high quality.

This is a staggering, jaw-dropping, Jalapeno pepper blast into the future of an experience with fantastical opportunities. Missing this would be akin to pushing frail old ladies off the bus and stealing bamboo from blind tiny little panda babies (Microgaming has a firm no-violence policy that extends to all its products and services – Microgaming). Well, kidding, missing it wouldn’t be as bad as that, and no-one would condone that kind of behaviour, but it would be, well, pretty bad. It is entirely possible to just let the OST run in the background as you work on something else because of just how awesome it is in itself, but the gaming experience is far, far beyond that. Ok, let’s do this. The battle with The Cylons lies ahead. Hopefully, way ahead. Way, way ahead.

What she has to show you

  • 5 reels
  • 243 paylines
  • Jackpot!
  • Explosive RTP of 96.6%.

The mechanism

The maximum amount of coins per line is 300, and with a minimum coin size of just $0.01, it’s easy to get going. The wild is easily recognizable with the familiar logo, and will stand in for any symbol but the scatter. Catch it on the reels in the base game and free spins and reel 1 in Normal mode.

Distance is of no importance. This fantastically awesome game is now everywhere. Everything has been invaded – PCs, iPads and smartphones, you name it.

THE CHARACTERS (Symbols)

Meet the stellar cast:

  • Six
  • Col. Tigh
  • Hello
  • Ellen

  • Cards from Ace to 10
  • 46 winning combinations.

The trip, as I mentioned, continues on mobile, so don’t forget to take this portable black hole with you wherever you go (just not into educational environment or bedroom…no-no).

How much you win?

What would you say of, say, maximum win of, hey, some 70 000 coins? Wilds, Multipliers, Free Spins – the treasure lies before you, bare and glistening, just waiting to be collected.

A product of Microgaming’s sweet deal with Universal Studios that allowed the company to produce a slot game that s more like a videogame thanks to a sizeable budget, this punch-packing rollercoaster ride also features a few bonus games.

Three Battlestar symbols mean 15 free spin games. And that means triple the winnings.

Kudos to the USA’s finest for extended functionality: let’s start with a ranking system. As you spin the reels, you collect points, just like you would in the Army. Now, be patient, because this may take a while, as it would in real life (the old space wolves at the top only accept those tested by time…a lot of time). However, a slow but steady flow of points will reinforce your confidence, and, when the time comes, and it will, new video clips will be unlocked, letting the story unfold infinitely.

Battlestar RankThe ranking bar is at the bottom of the reels. Keep an eye on your journey from civilian to admiral as the progress bar fills up. Content warning: ranking only means more unlocked videos and prestige, not increased payouts (do it for the love). Still, the speed with which you move on to the next level depends on the amount of the bet.

Talking about bonuses, here come the A-list heavyhitters:

15 free spins with 3x multiplier

As five reels turn wildly into Wild Reels, increasing payouts massively, The Ion Storm bonus game descends on you (but it’s more like a freefall). All wins pay both way with the Run mode which turns on randomly at any point during the game. Additional winnings are achieved through a symbol with a countdown screen on the centre reels which turns one of the symbols into a mystery symbol.

Also, during the Run mode the Fight mode may be spontaneously activated, and random symbols turn into the Wild symbols in this mode. If that wasn’t enough, wild symbols can themselves double, providing even more winnings.

You know you’ve hit The Jump Bonus Game with the emergence of the FLT symbol. Watch out! Create multiple combinations and multiple payoffs.

battle star galactica shipWhen three or more ships get together, you’re in for The Free Spins Bonus Game, which is sure to send your head spinning with excitement.

Where to next?

The space is so vast no human will ever hope to reach its limits. However, in the extremely unlikely event you’ve grown sick of g-force acceleration, here is something down-to-Earth and familiar and sort of unicorny and rainbowy (I’ll give you a hint, it is our Jewels of The Orient slot, which is much less threatening and filled with exciting things like palaces and Thai-curious girls).
