Celine Dion's connection to video poker
Your most positive associations with video poker likely include the heady atmosphere of a casino,
the tingling challenge to your wits the games present and the satisfaction of winning.
Celine Dion, alas, was forced to associate video poker with, if not aspirin, then some other headache remedy.
Her husband Ren Angelil was in 2000 accused of groping a certain Yun Kyeong Sung Kwon, an
ordained minister of the Full Gospel World Church. As Angelil was battling cancer at the time
and Celine was undergoing difficult fertility treatments, the couple decided to pay an amount
presumably higher than a Royal Flush bonus jackpot to Kwon in order to avoid court proceedings.
The settlement nonetheless proved inadequate to Kwon's greed. She returned to the charge,
claiming that she had been a guest at the Imperial Palace in March 2000 when she left the hotel
and went to Caesars Palace. She alleged that she was playing video poker when Angelil passed
and winked at her. She claimed they had a brief discussion and that as she was departing, Angelil
trailed her to her room at the Imperial Palace and compelled her to engage in sexual intercourse against her will.
Angelil's lawyer said that the lawsuit was an absurd fabrication contrived by opportunistic people
looking for a way to make money. A short time after the suit was initiated, Reverend Kwon was arrested
for having signed more than $500,000 worth of bad checks. She was further discovered to have more than $500,000
in additional, gambling debt. Her credibility plunged lower than a non-paying poker hand; the charges against
Angelil were dropped.
The moral of the story is that you should go to Vegas, take in Celine Dion's show and play a little video poker.
Remember, never hold a kicker, and if an ordained minister of the Full Gospel World Church winks at you, just walk on by!
