Google U.K. expands online gambling advertising ban
Already off limits to online casinos, sportsbooks, bingo and affiliates, the powers that be at the most powerful search engine on the planet have decided to clear its online gambling slate even further.
A new policy effective immediately has now extended its advertising ban to all affiliates with the primary purpose of driving traffic to online gambling sites, including those that offer only free play or casino game tutorials.
“Having looked at this issue very carefully,” a representative for Google U.K. said in a statement, “and considered the views of our users, we have decided to extend our policy.
"While we respect people's differing views on gambling - and support freedom of expression - we believe that this new policy is simpler for everyone to understand and more in tune with users' wishes."
The change comes at a peculiar time for online casinos in the U.K., considering September sees the complete phasing in of the 2005 U.K. Gambling Act, which allows for online casinos to advertise through previously off-limit media outlets, including television and radio.
