How to play online roulette

Roulette is played on a roulette table consisting of the wheel and a layout containing various bet options. The numbers on the wheel alternate pairs of odd numbers with pairs of even numbers and alternate between black and red. Zero and double zero are green. The table layout is arranged so that the 36 numbers are arranged in 3 columns of 12 numbers each. Up to eight players may participate in a spin; they bet against the house, represented by an attendant who is called a croupier (pronounced Crew-pee-ay as in 'hay').

Once all players have placed their bets, the croupier sets the wheel in motion and introduces the ball to spinning in the opposite direction. As the ball loses momentum in its spin, the croupier makes a gesture over the table surface and announces that there are to be no more bets. When the ball settles in a number's slot, the croupier places a dolly over it, pays out winning bets and clears the layout for the next spin.

Bets are placed on the layout with colored chips acquired from the croupier. Winning colored chips are exchanged by the croupier for value chips which the house in turn exchanges for cash.

What is called an 'American' roulette wheel has two zero slots giving the house a much greater advantage than when a 'European' roulette wheel with only one zero slot is used. Which type of wheel is used impacts players because the house advantage differs; in the case of a single zero wheel the house advantage is 2.7%, meaning that the house is entitled to 2.7% of your winnings; in the case of a double zero wheel the house earns 5.26% of your winnings. Furthermore, it is customary to tip the croupier when you win. Different roulette tables have different minimum and maximum bets.

Placing bets in roulette

Each player is assigned a different color of chip. You may make multiple bets on a single spin.Below are the different classes of bets and their corresponding payouts. You will notice that bets may be placed on individual numbers, groups of numbers, or characteristics of the numbers, such as whether they are even or odd. For example, if you place your bet on that square in the layout which says "odd," and any odd number comes out, you win.

Some casinos observe rules of 'Surrender' and 'En Prison' for even money bets. In Surrender, you receive half of your even-money wager back should the ball land on the single or double zero. In the case of 'En Prison,' when the ball lands on 0 or 00, your even-money bet must stay where it is, its fate determined by the next spin. On that next spin, if you win, you take back all your chips with no additional winnings; if you lose, your bet gets swept away; if a 0 comes up again, your wager remains En Prison.
